Each fall, when deer season rolls around the Cumberland Gap High School Wildlife and Fisheries Science Class gets busy collecting deer data. The class members are volunteers for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and they help with collecting deer data here in Region IV. Sterling Daniels, TWRA’s Species Program Biologist for Region IV, visits class and trains our students on data collection and CWD (Chronic Waste Disease) sampling. They learn how to age, measure antlers, and extract samples for CWD testing.
This is an excellent opportunity for our students to experience real-world wildlife management practices and techniques. They work along side with TWRA personnel and Lincoln Memorial University Conservation Biology students. Our students do a great job during “Deer Days”. During the muzzleloader and gun opening days, they work at Cunningham’s in Tazewell, and this year they had the opportunity to visit Chick Swan Wildlife Management Area in Sharps Chapel to work a muzzleloader hunt.
Our students earn volunteer/community service hours that they can use for scholarships and on their resumes. They learn how important it is to interact with their community and our Tennessee deer hunters.
